 Tourism Attractions

The name of our Province is associated with the oldest mountains in Europe – the Świętokrzyskie Range. And where does the name of the mountains come from? The legend says…
“It was about 1000 years ago, when king Bolesław Chrobry reigned. The King invited to Poland his kin- the Hungarian prince – Emeryk. Prior to this long journey the young man received from his father a  relic of the Holy Cross framed in gold, which was to protect him against evil adventures in a foreign country. To honour the eminent guest a great hunt in the forest fir was organized. Dozens of warriors, hundreds of beaters, packs of retrievers ran into the wild forest. Suddenly among the thicket of trees the prince Emeryk saw a huge male deer. The Deer fled into a wild thicket and Emeryk ran after him. The chase lasted a long time. The animal suddenly fell into dense thicket and its antler tangled up with branches. The deer was trapped.  The overjoyed prince drew an arrow from the quiver, strung his bow and took aim at his trophy, and then a strange and unexpected thing happened. The deer turned his head toward the hunter and Emeryk saw the cross, surrounded by an unearthly glow between antlers. The young man considered this event as a sign from God and promised to build magnificent monastery in the place of this wonderful occurrence and leave the relic of the Holy Cross received from his father. And so it happened. On Łysa Mountain a monastery was built, and that magical deer is one of the symbols of Świętokrzyskie Mountains up to this day”.
The name of Świętokrzyskie Mountains and Świętokrzyski Region, one of the most picturesque regions of Poland, takes its roots from the legend.
